SUMMARY
My project explores the exploitation of women in illegal surrogacy practices, particularly in China, where surrogacy is banned but underground markets persist. Starting with research on feminist perspectives and bodily autonomy, I developed a booklet prototype to educate women about the risks and ethical issues of surrogacy. The project combines personal insights and contextual analysis to create an accessible, impactful resource for awareness and empowerment.
challenge
I identified significant gaps in awareness about surrogacy’s risks, particularly among women in China, due to its illegality and societal taboos. Stakeholders, including potential surrogates, lack accessible information and resources to make informed decisions. These challenges emerged through research, stakeholder feedback, and my focus on feminist perspectives, which highlighted the urgency to address bodily autonomy and socioeconomic vulnerabilities.
Outcome
The final outcome is an educational booklet designed for distribution in public spaces like hospitals and online platforms. Combining with the Call To Action flyers that help to reach more audience, this prototype addresses the identified gaps by providing clear, accessible information about surrogacy’s risks, laws, and ethical concerns, empowering women to make informed decisions. It aligns with stakeholder needs by raising awareness and fostering dialogue around reproductive rights and gender exploitation.
