SUMMARY
I thought about a space that would fill in the gaps of blackness I wanted to see and feel. Going through my past works, notes, and voice memos, I found that I was searching for what comfort and culture feel and look like. I started by combining Soho House and the Black Panther Party and slowly realized that isn't what those two words reflect, so I pivoted to creating a society that makes black people feel comfort and culture.
challenge
I noticed early on that I needed to provide a space that was more immersive than anything. I also soon came to the realization that the people I would be making for wouldn't be the only people who would be engaging with the activation. However, creating a space that promotes black art in a non-triggering or trauma-porn way, would foster a community that is on the basis of safety and understanding. I viewed pain points when discussing with SH that they wanted their senses to fully feel engaged which is my reasoning for my prototype.
Outcome
The project overall became a business pitch for a physical space. However, it also took shape in sound as well in discussion with folks who were willing to listen. I think that with my stakeholders they were glad that this was even something spoken about and enjoyed listening to what this piece can look like.
