SUMMARY
"It’s Because of That Damn Phone" is a social research project aimed at bridging older and younger generations to foster meaningful relationships beyond digital dependency. Drawing from research and older generations' social experiences, I created a space to bridge cultural divides, reduce reliance on digital technology, and promote genuine human connection. This project highlights the importance of interaction and understanding across generations in a digital dependent world.
challenge
I identified a gap in fostering connections between Gen Z and older generations due to differing communication styles, social habits, and resistance to change. Gen Z seeks alternatives to constant connectivity, while older generations feel disconnected from digital life. The opportunity lies in creating a physical, shared space to bridge these divides, leveraging Gen Z's curiosity about pre-digital life and older generations' desire for appreciation and understanding. This addresses unmet needs for authentic interaction and mutual connection.
Outcome
The project took the form of a social exhibition, “It’s Because of That Damn Phone,” featuring four immersive installations: Memory Lane, Film Screening, Listening Booths, and Happy Hour. These installations use photography, film, music, and social interaction to explore generational perspectives on life before digital technology. By encouraging visitors to disconnect from their phones and engage in shared experiences, the exhibition bridges generational gaps, addressing Gen Z's curiosity about pre-digital life and older generations' desire for meaningful connections and appreciation.
