Shawn Fletcher
Alumni Mentor
Graduation: December 2020
I grew up in Connecticut with my Jamaican parents who had recently immigrated to the US. In high school I ran track which was a big driver in me going to my first university, the University of Connecticut. After two years of not feeling like it was the place I should be I applied to Parsons’ fashion design program in hopes of one day being a creative director. I was accepted but an advisor suggested I switch to strategic design and management because she thought it was a better fit for me. After the switch I worked diligently to find out what creative directors did and saw if it was something I wanted to do.
After learning from many creative directors what they did I realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do. Around that same time, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris and take corporate finance classes. I thought it was a great second option and decided to pursue that option. Almost 10 months post-graduation I have been working in finance and living in New York. In my free time I ride my motorcycle, box, workout, hang out with friends, explore the city, cook, and read.
