SUMMARY
A Guide to Self-Sufficiency: An Exploration into Fabrication is the documentation of my progress into independent textile design. Too often are we reliant on markets of the textile industry to be able to create “on our own.” Follow along in my pursuit of self-sufficiency, to be able to find freedoms of the consumerist society in which we are dependent upon. I delve into the crafts of weaving and knitting, using floor looms and domestic knitting machines. And despite their names, they aren’t the mechanized machinery which would detach ourselves from our creations.
challenge
As a society in these modern times, we cannot exist without the market. We cannot live if we do not consume. Even as a maker, I felt the struggle that I could not make without consuming: constantly buying fabric and supplies. True escapism of the market is necessary to allow our creations to truly be self-made. Humans do not have the necessity to make our own clothes, or fabrics anymore, so we must preserve this craft before it is lost, and we truly become entirely dependent on consumerism. Learning to be self-sufficient is the protest we need to truly be artists.
Outcome
The pursuit of self-sufficiency is the only way for us to fight our capitalistic, consumerist society, and keep any semblance of artistry alive. A Guide to Self-Sufficiency: An Exploration into Fabrication is my personal act of protest. It follows my personal pursuit of self-sufficiency. Many will find their own paths of independence, through other means. My independence was found through self-sufficient textile design, how will you find yours?
