SUMMARY
I found myself frustrated with not knowing which local businesses offer student discounts. I was curious to know if other students had similar experiences. So I conducted research. I quickly realized a pattern: students missed out on savings opportunities due to a lack of signage, non-updated websites, and no alerts for student discounts. Hence, I created UNIDIS a student discount platform that provides students with up-to-date discount information from local eateries in their area. I believe every student should have access to the support that our local businesses offer. You would be surprised at how many local eateries provide discounts or promotions for their student customers, and for a college student living in NYC, every cent counts.
challenge
I discovered that college students need a less tedious way to discover discount opportunities; they need reliable information and a support system to help them save money. I noticed there was an opportunity to create a platform that specifically focuses on discounts from local eateries in NYC, as the major student discount platforms mainly focus on big chain restaurants rather than local businesses. This limits the opportunities to step out and explore new locations and limits the opportunity to build a sense of community in their area.
Outcome
I decided to focus on the student’s user experience for this project. I wanted to create something that would facilitate the process of searching for and redeeming discounts more quickly and effectively. There are mainly apps that focus on big chain restaurant promotions and food delivery services (which apply too many fees), but there is no student discount platform specifically focusing on local businesses, and that is where I placed my attention for this project.
