SUMMARY

How would you feel if a vital part of your heritage was erased? Guatemalan huipiles—handwoven garments rich in history, symbols, and meaning—are cultural artifacts that tell the stories of Indigenous communities. Inspired by my roots and my grandfather’s collection, I explored these textiles through interviews, exhibitions, and prototypes. The exhibition provided a platform to showcase their artistry and raise awareness of the challenges artisans face, such as cultural erosion and undervaluation. My project amplifies artisans' voices and creates a coalition to propose sustainable solutions for preserving this heritage.

challenge

I identified a gap in the appreciation and support for Guatemalan huipiles among international audiences. Indigenous artisans face challenges like undervaluation, economic instability, and cultural erosion as fast fashion overshadows traditional weaving. Through interviews with weavers, wearers, and buyers, I found opportunities to educate and engage stakeholders by showcasing the cultural significance and craftsmanship of huipiles. By emphasizing their stories, intricate designs, and labor-intensive processes, my project creates pathways to preserve this heritage and generate sustainable economic opportunities for artisans.

Outcome

The project culminated in an interactive exhibition and educational prototype showcasing Guatemalan huipiles. This included storytelling elements, immersive experiences, and insights into the weaving process, directly addressing gaps in awareness and appreciation among international buyers. By emphasizing the cultural significance and craftsmanship behind each huipil, the project fosters a deeper connection between artisans and consumers. It also proposes sustainable solutions, such as collaborative workshops and fair trade practices, to support artisans economically while preserving their traditions.
