SUMMARY
This project aims to bridge the gap between small-scale wool producers and the markets that could benefit from their products. By proposing an extension to Fibershed, we designed a platform that enhances visibility, facilitates connections, and streamlines communication between producers, designers, and consumers. This solution promotes sustainable practices, local economies, and supports ethical wool production, addressing a critical disconnect in the wool industry and ultimately creating a more connected and responsible marketplace.
challenge
Small-scale wool producers face limited visibility and struggle to connect with designers and conscious consumers. The closure of major wool buyers and the lack of a centralized platform exacerbate this issue. Designers and consumers also lack access to local producers who prioritize sustainability. These gaps hinder support for ethical practices and limit access to unique, locally-produced wool products.
Outcome
The project resulted in the proposal of a Fibershed extension featuring advanced search tools, detailed producer profiles, direct messaging, and custom order portals. These features directly address the challenges by improving visibility for producers, simplifying sourcing for designers, and promoting sustainable wool practices. Our solution builds stronger connections across the supply chain while supporting local economies and ethical production.
