SUMMARY

Cling began as a solution to reduce single-use plastic bags by making reusable bags more convenient. Through research and customer interviews, we identified the core issue: people often forget or find reusable bags inconvenient to carry. To address this, we designed Cling—a compact, retractable bag attachment for phones, ensuring a sustainable alternative is always within reach. Our prototype simplifies the shopping experience while promoting eco-friendly habits. This matters because small, practical innovations can drive significant behavioral change, reducing waste and fostering sustainability.

challenge

We identified key gaps in convenience, accessibility, and habit formation around reusable bags. Stakeholders, including shoppers and retailers, expressed frustration with forgetting bags or finding them bulky to carry. Through interviews and observations, we discovered that most people desire sustainable options but prioritize convenience in their daily routines. This revealed an opportunity to integrate reusable bags seamlessly into everyday life. Cling addresses these needs by offering a lightweight, retractable bag attachment for phones, bridging the gap between eco-conscious intentions and practical use.

Outcome

The project took the form of Cling, a retractable reusable bag designed as a phone attachment. This compact and lightweight solution ensures users always have a bag on hand, addressing the inconvenience and forgetfulness that often hinder reusable bag use. By seamlessly integrating into everyday routines, Cling bridges the gap between sustainability and practicality, meeting stakeholder needs for convenience while reducing single-use plastic dependency. Its innovative design fills a clear market gap for accessible and eco-friendly shopping solution
