SUMMARY
Tengreen Collective is an initiative promoting Neo-Tengrism through art in the face of the Anthropocene, redefining the communal attitude to nature. It is dedicated to reviving the ancient wisdom of Tengrism while fostering environmental stewardship. Through art and creative expression, the goal is to connect and inspire Turkic nomads worldwide, inspiring a global community rooted in reverence for nature and tradition. By highlighting the synergy between cultural heritage and sustainability, individuals are empowered to honor their ancestral ties to the earth while addressing the challenges of the climate crisis.
challenge
Living half a world away has deepened my connection to my roots while sparking an identity crisis: too “Kazakh” for the West, too “Western” for Kazakhs. Yet, I’ve recently embraced this as a unique opportunity for growth. Observing my country’s development both- as an insider and an outsider has shown me how exactly Kazakhstan stands out on the international canvas. As a post-Soviet country with an incredibly rich preceding culture, it has faced major challenges regarding its cultural identity. Erasure, genocide, colonialism, and radical Islamisation meet today with the need for cultural revival and claiming ownership of the past.
Outcome
Insights from stakeholder interviews highlighted several pain points, all tied to a lack of institutional support, unity among Turkic cultures, historical and cultural awareness, and action on climate change. In response, I envisioned an independent initiative with growth and collaboration potential, aimed at connecting individuals abroad with their Turkic heritage. Using creative methods to promote, engage, and educate, it seeks to shift attitudes toward nature and emphasize the climate crisis's urgency. This vision culminated in Tengreen Collective—an engaging and educational magazine embodying these solutions.
