SUMMARY

I began my project by exploring the impact of social media on American consumerism, particularly how it drives overconsumption through microtrends in fashion. Through extensive research and interviews, I discovered that social media not only accelerates the spread of fleeting trends but also creates pressure on consumers to constantly update their wardrobes, often at the expense of sustainability. This matters because it highlights the urgent need for awareness around our purchasing habits and encourages a shift towards more sustainable fashion choices, ultimately aiming to reduce environmental harm and promote mindful consumption.

challenge

I identified several key stakeholder needs and opportunities. Consumers expressed a desire for more sustainable fashion options and education about the environmental impact of their choices. Retailers and brands showed a need for strategies to balance trend-responsiveness with sustainability. There's an opportunity for social media platforms to promote more sustainable consumption patterns and for influencers to advocate for responsible fashion choices. These insights highlight the complex interplay between fashion, social media, and sustainability, pointing toward potential solutions for more responsible consumption.

Outcome

My project evolved into a comprehensive analysis of how social media drives unsustainable fashion consumption through microtrends. It addresses key stakeholder needs by raising consumer awareness about the environmental impact of fast fashion, highlighting opportunities for social media platforms to promote sustainable choices, and identifying strategies for brands to develop more eco-friendly production methods. By addressing these gaps, my project provides valuable insights for all stakeholders in consumer goods and the fashion industry, aiming to promote mindful consumption patterns and reduce the environmental footprint of trends.
