SUMMARY
The Green Pigeon bridges the gap between NYC residents and local farmers’ markets by increasing accessibility and encouraging sustainable eating. Guided by the network of 48 greenmarkets run by GrowNYC, this app updates the market in real time, seasonal recipes, and profiles of the vendors. In my research, I found convenience, awareness, and access to be major barriers, all of which the app addresses with innovative features that inspire users to shop more locally and eat more seasonally. It also supports local farmers, links the community, and provides a cultural drive for changing food systems.
challenge
Consumers struggle to access real-time market information, find seasonal produce, and plan their visits, as there is a limited awareness of market schedules and vendor offerings. Most consumers do not know where and when markets are open and so cannot shop regularly. In addition, there is a lack of tools to facilitate easy navigation of the market experience and connect with local vendors. In return, the opportunity provides a platform that can resolve these gaps and make local food shopping more accessible, convenient, and informed for NYC residents.
Outcome
The result of this project is The Green Pigeon app, a tool to enhance the customer experience at GrowNYC’s greenmarkets. It makes market trips easier by providing real-time information on which vendors are present, what time the markets are open, and what produce is in season. The app solves major consumer pain points-convenience and awareness-and enables users to easily plan shopping trips, discover local foods, and connect with their community. This solution would encourage regular market visits, educate users on seasonal eating, and support more sustainable food choices.
