SUMMARY
My research revealed that 70% of NYC young adults are unsatisfied with their access to nature, leading to mental strain and a weakened connection to the natural world. Informed by Biophilic Design, WHIMSEED is a design-forward brand that seamlessly integrates nature inside. Our debut product, the Grow Lamp, uses LED grow lights to sprout seeds in 3-7 days, even without sunlight. Whimseed offers a quick setup process, engaging users in a brief yet satisfying gardening activity. Its dual functionality as both a light source and a decorative piece adds beauty and brightness to any space, while fostering an appreciation for nature.
challenge
With the growing climate crisis, now is the time to strengthen our bond with the natural world. Through desk research, interviews, surveys, and sensory mapping, I found NYC young adults struggle to incorporate greenery into their homes due to limited sunlight, time, and plant care knowledge. I identified an opportunity to create low-maintenance, functional designs that bring the outside in. Designed for the busy on-the-go New Yorker, The Grow Lamp allows plants to thrive with minimal care. The product enhances mood, improves air quality, and reduces stress, positively enhancing mental and physical well-being.
Outcome
I aimed to craft an ethos for the world the product would inhabit—one that feels whimsical, campy, and fun, yet chic and modern. In collaboration with Videographer Miakaela Cadenhead, I produced a short “go-to-market strategy” commercial. When designing the set for the shoot, my focus was to create a highly imaginative environment with little references to the typical NYC girl, such as the classic TOM FORD photo book and vintage Vogue magazines. Obviously, the focus is the lamp. I wanted it to feel campy, but at the same time feeling natural.
