SUMMARY
Our project, Bringing Down the Opacity, addresses AI skepticism in healthcare by acting as a patient advocate. We shifted our target from practitioners to administrators to prioritize risk mitigation and patient retention. Our solution allows patients to review clinical notes translated into layman's terms and flag inaccuracies for provider review. This transparency improves data quality, reduces malpractice risk, and ensures care consistency. By balancing AI efficiency with human oversight, we foster trust and systemic accountability in medical charting.
challenge
We identified a critical trust gap, as 89% of Canadians express skepticism toward AI in healthcare. Our research revealed that practitioners fear "hypochondriac behavior," while mentors highlighted the need to address systemic failures rather than just point-of-failure errors. By shifting our focus to administrators, we targeted overarching needs for malpractice mitigation and patient retention. This opportunity allows us to use patient-led chart reviews to improve data quality and identify discriminatory patterns in care.
Outcome
The project evolved into the Patient Advocate Portal, a platform where medical charts are translated into layman's terms for patient verification. Patients can approve or flag specific statements, which are then reviewed by administrators to ensure accuracy. This addresses AI skepticism by keeping "real humans" in the loop. For administrators, it mitigates malpractice risks and identifies systemic discrimination through yearly reports on denial and appeal rates. This transparency fills a clear market gap while improving data quality and patient retention.
