SUMMARY
CakeNow began with a simple insight: in NYC, celebrations are spontaneous, but custom cakes are not. Most bakeries require days of notice, creating a gap between how people live and how they celebrate. Through interviews, prototyping, and user testing, I designed a seamless customization flow embedded in delivery apps, allowing users to design a cake in under a minute and receive it within an hour. CakeNow matters because it brings personalization, creativity, and convenience into moments that can’t wait.
challenge
Interviews revealed several gaps: people needed last minute celebration items, felt overwhelmed by traditional bakery processes, and lacked digital tools for fast personalization. Users wanted aesthetic control but without too many options, and they needed visual confirmation to trust the order. The biggest opportunity was integrating customization into platforms they already use daily, eliminating friction while meeting emotional and practical needs.
Outcome
The project resulted in a refined digital prototype featuring live cake previews, simplified steps, delivery/pickup options, and social sharing before and after design. Expanded testing showed users completed the flow in under a minute and felt more confident with visual feedback. CakeNow directly addresses stakeholder needs by offering fast, intuitive customization embedded in familiar apps, making spontaneous celebrations personal, effortless, and shareable.
