SUMMARY
My project examines the growing issue of media overconsumption among Generation Z, particularly through digital platforms and social media. Members of this generation rarely engage with physical newspapers on a daily, or even monthly basis. Instead, relying almost exclusively on technology for news and cultural content. This project seeks to respond to that need by reintroducing print as a meaningful, communal medium for cultural engagement and expression. A newspaper that captures the rhythm of New York’s Gen Z creative scene while honoring the joy of holding culture in your hands.
challenge
I found that for my main stakeholder, Gen Z in New York, overconsumption of digital media has a poor impact on mental health, there is a decline of traditional printed newsform engagement among Gen Z, they experience bias/negativity in mainstream news media, and with all of this there is a growing sense of isolation with the illusion of connection. This provided me with my opportunity to create something more tangible where younger individuals could put down their phone without feeling completely disconnected from their peers.
Outcome
Collective Monthly, a highly visual and short form writing based physical newspaper focused on connecting the New York Gen Z community spotlighting art, fashion, and food. It consists of short form writing, interviews, and recommendations surrounding the New York community. The newspaper will be accompanied by curated events in collaboration with different brands and people around the city, as well as brand partnerships. The project seeks to prove that print is not a relic of the past, but a vessel for renewal. It embodies the potential of design to foster belonging, to slow us down, and to remind us of the tactile, human side of connection.
