SUMMARY
Dastkar House began with a simple but urgent question: how might we help Pakistani artisans gain direct access to global buyers so they can have more agency over their work and earn fair pay? Working with Fashion Revolution Pakistan, our team designed an ecosystem consisting of an e-commerce platform, an artisan onboarding strategy, and a live pop-up event. We validated demand by hosting a 50-person artisan pop-up in Brooklyn that achieved a 20% conversion rate and $190 in product sales. Dastkar House proves that when perception meets infrastructure, handcrafted heritage becomes a viable global business.
challenge
Pakistani artisans, many with over a decade of craft experience in embroidery and textiles, operate within family workshop structures with no direct access to international markets. Middlemen capture most of the economic value, leaving artisans underpaid and invisible to the global buyers who would value their work. We identified this gap through research into Fashion Revolution Pakistan's network, which revealed that the barrier was not the quality of the craft but the lack of infrastructure, digital presence, and market access for artisans to sell their work independently.
Outcome
The project resulted in Dastkar House: an e-commerce platform centering artisans at the forefront of every product, a structured onboarding pipeline, and an artisan pop-up event held at Industry of All Nations in Brooklyn. The pop-up sold 9 items, generated $190 in revenue, attracted 50 attendees, and secured a free venue partnership, further validating the model. Through posters, social media ads, and the pop-up event, attendees were driven to the Dastkar House website, putting both the money and the narrative back in the hands of the maker.
