How digital product passports create value and authenticity in luxury supply chains

SUMMARY
The global resale market is growing 3x faster than first-hand retail, yet lacks proper infrastructure for transparency and authenticity. Digital Product Passports (DPPs), introduced by the EU in 2024, can create and scale trust and value among consumers and brands. DPPs are digital records that tie lifecycle data to products, including authenticity, provenance, and resale history. While DPPs effectively track product lifecycle and ensure transparency, they require user input, and 65% of people have never heard of them. I prototyped a user-centered “DPP wallet” app that makes product tracking effortless and lays a framework for the future.
challenge
The vintage luxury resale market lacks transparent item history, creating trust issues for buyers and sellers. Shoppers can't verify authenticity, provenance, or condition history. Sellers can't easily prove an item's value or story. While Digital Product Passports could solve this by tying lifecycle data to item identity, 65% of consumers are unfamiliar with them. More critically, existing DPP systems require manual user input at every transaction, creating friction that prevents adoption. The gap: there's no consumer-facing tool that makes participating in a DPP ecosystem intuitive, valuable, and effortless for secondhand shoppers.
Outcome
I proposed and prototyped a user-centered “DPP wallet” that allows consumers to track item history, authenticity, view how item provenance adds value to their portfolio, and use one-click resale tools to move items from one person’s wallet to another. The system builds infrastructure now– capturing care, repair, and ownership data– that becomes invaluable as today's items age into tomorrow's vintage market.
