SUMMARY
We introduce Grubhub Budget, an integrated in-app feature that helps students track monthly budgets, monitor weekly spending, understand savings on food, organize expenses by category, and use Grubhub Picks to stay within budget while ordering. Through student feedback and multiple iterations, we refined the experience into a seamless, native tool. This shifts Grubhub beyond transactions, positioning it as the first food delivery platform that actively helps users manage their food spending and make everyday financial decisions with intention.
challenge
We identified a clear gap in how students manage food spending: while they were actively budgeting, no food delivery platform supported that behavior. Through feedback, we found users wanted financial awareness but resisted switching between multiple apps or using external tools. The main stakeholder need was simplicity everything in one place. This revealed an opportunity for Grubhub to move beyond transactions and integrate budgeting directly into the ordering experience, reducing friction while increasing control and trust.
Outcome
The project became Grubhub Budget, a native in-app feature that integrates budgeting directly into the food ordering experience. It allows students to track spending, view savings, organize expenses, and make budget-aware choices while ordering. This directly addresses the need for simplicity and all-in-one functionality, removing the friction of external tools. It fills a market gap by shifting Grubhub from a transactional platform to the first food delivery app that actively supports financial decision-making in everyday life.
