SUMMARY
This project explores how immigrants navigate complex systems during high-stakes life events such as job loss. Through research, interviews, and prototyping, we identified that confusion, fear, and lack of trust often prevent people from using official resources. We developed concepts including proactive outreach and a guided USCIS smart assistant that translates complex processes into clear, personalized pathways. By shifting from form-based systems to guidance-driven experiences, the project aims to reduce uncertainty, improve access, and rebuild trust in public services.
challenge
We identified key gaps around clarity, trust, and accessibility. Users struggle to interpret legal language, understand timelines, and know what applies to their situation. Many rely on informal sources due to fear of enforcement or misuse of personal data. Through interviews and testing, we observed hesitation, confusion, and decision fatigue, especially during moments like job loss. These insights revealed an opportunity to reduce cognitive burden and create systems that proactively guide users rather than requiring them to navigate complex processes alone.
Outcome
The project resulted in a set of prototypes focused on proactive, guidance-driven services. These include a life-event triggered outreach system and a USCIS-integrated smart assistant that provides personalized timelines, plain-language explanations, and next steps. These solutions directly address user needs by reducing confusion, increasing transparency, and supporting decision-making in real time. By embedding guidance within existing systems, the outcome improves usability without requiring major infrastructure changes, making services more accessible, trustworthy, and effective.
