SUMMARY
Design shapes our material world, human behavior, emotions, and quality of life. No industry exists in mutual exclusion with it. And yet, designers remain one of the most historically and persistently undervalued working demographics. This prompted deep, independent research into systemic challenges faced by designers across industries, grounded in primary interviews, analysis frameworks, and prototyping — leading to the conception of Komun Collective, a modern gallery concept for furniture designers, built on the philosophy of fostering connection to protect the well-being and freedom of designers, and preserve the essence of their craft.
challenge
Through primary interviews, secondary research, and a range of analysis frameworks, five persistent systemic challenges were identified: economic insecurity, lack of creative freedom, burnout, intense competition, and structural barriers to entry. These are not isolated frustrations — they are corroborated across industries, perpetuated by frameworks that prioritize overhead control over autonomy and market access over talent. The core gap: designers do not lack resources to design. What they lack is a viable, accessible alternative path to bring their visions to life and be compensated fairly for them.
Outcome
Komun Collective is a luxury furniture design collective and gallery, a touchpoint between furniture designers and powerhouse brands and production companies. We recruit unapologetic talent, young, freelance, or corporate-based, and handle operations, PR, and client relations, connecting designers to those who can materialize their visions. Clients purchase production rights to individual designs for a defined period. We take a commission. Designers take the credit and fair royalties at 15–20%, with complete creative agency, compared to the industry standard of 3–10%. The talent brings the design. We take on the rest for real industry impact.
