SUMMARY
PYN Leather was my response to the lack of responsibility in the fashion industry. I wanted to research materials that not only were sustainable but actually reduced waste. Thats when I found regenerative materials such as plant leathers. Ultimately I chose to pursue using Pineapple leather due to its biodegradability, appearance and texture. I found the fashion industry is inundated with greenwashing and consumers are skeptical of sustainable products due to lack of transparency on production and product after-life. I discovered that the majority of people want to shop sustainable but don't want to sacrifice style to do it.
challenge
I identified the gap in the market for those who want to shop sustainably but don't want to get conned doing it. I also found that many people felt that sustainable brands were not exciting and often times lean into being just a sustainable brand rather than having a real brand identity to back it. I addressed these concerns by creating a stylish, timeless leather goods brand that feels fully realized and could stand alone being sustainable or not.
Outcome
My project ended up with a final prototype and identifying the gap in the market of consumers who want to shop sustainably but don't want to sacrifice style or versatility to do it. I positioned PYN in the mid luxury space catering to women on the go in the 20-40's range. My final prototype was called 'The Everything Bag'. One bag designed to take you from morning to night. A bag large enough to fit a laptop but small enough to take out to dinner including a pocket inside for utility.
