SUMMARY
Reflekt Kit is a safety and visibility toolkit designed to help BIPOC protestors navigate everyday surveillance. I began by researching how facial recognition disproportionately targets marginalized communities, then tested materials that distort biometric capture. Through interviews, prototyping, and field testing, I developed a portable system of reflective sprays, patches, masks, and rights education tools. The project matters because it restores agency where surveillance removes it.
challenge
I identified a major gap between those most affected by surveillance and their access to practical, affordable countermeasures. Stakeholders- BIPOC protestors, organizers, and everyday users- needed tools that were discreet, low cost, and effective against evolving biometric systems. Prototyping revealed challenges in durability, user clarity, and fit, as well as the need for bilingual rights education. These insights shaped the materials, instructions, and product ecosystem
Outcome
The project culminated in an integrated ecosystem built around accessibility, circularity, and user agency. Reflekt Kit now operates as a modular system: core tools, refills, discreet pickup/shipping, and clear educational guidance all work together to help users navigate surveillance safely. This ecosystem reduces barriers to entry, supports long-term use through refills, and creates a sustainable, scalable model that meets the ongoing needs of high-risk communities.
