SUMMARY
My project, The Art of the Disruptive Experience: Discipline as Social Architecture, identifies a cultural gap in socialization, questioning whether current norms are keeping pace with the demands of a rapidly progressing world. By examining the relationship between distraction and restriction, I have concluded that the more noise we have in our lives, the more discipline necessary for stabilization. My project takes a human-centered approach to creating real connection and presence through an experiential dining concept rooted in social rules and intentional curation.
challenge
Within the attention economy, internet culture, and isolation epidemic we are seeing today, I have identified a need for authentic connection and community. While so many solutions stem toward AI algorithms, social apps, and the internet for connection, my approach is more organic and simple.
Outcome
My project ultimately resulted in an experiential dining concept called "With You." On November 7, With You came to life as a fully executed mock-restaurant event for 30 ticketed guests ages 21-32. 90 minutes, 30 guests, 7 rules, 1 night only. My concept evolved hospitality beyond service into a place of transformation: where structure and strangeness created freedom. The outcome of my work directly impacted my guests lives. They were each sat and surrounded by strangers and left with good friends and what felt like a community. Going forward, I see this operating as a traveling event, but would eventually like to open a physical restaurant.
