SUMMARY
The New School academic course teaching students in social and relationship skills in order to navigate their adult lives as they enter adulthood.
challenge
In order to identify the pain points that our stakeholders were experiencing, we completed comparative analyses of similar organizations in the undergraduate space, worked to understand the resources available in universities, and tried to pinpoint a gap that students felt their universities were not filling. With this research, we were able to identify that a big issue on campuses in the U.S. was that domestic violence was rarely discussed. This silence makes the topic feel taboo and perpetuates the issue. We saw this opportunity and pitched our ideas to Speranza for ways they could enter this space and help students.
Outcome
For our Capstone 2 project, our team is pitching a collaboration between The New School and the Speranza Project to create an elective course. With Speranza’s expertise in handling domestic violence situations, they will develop, pitch, plan, and teach a semester-long course called “The Language of Healthy Relationships”. The pilot program will be at The New School, but ultimately the goal will be for Speranza to replicate the course at a university. By working with college students, Speranza will be able to increase awareness about violence in relationships, provide students with a toolkit for future relationships, and reduce fear.
