SUMMARY
Upon my initial observation of how disconnected many young transplants in the Lower East Side were from their communities, I set out to interview and observe as much as possible about why. After collecting my research, it became clear that many of them simply weren't aware of any of the things happening in their neighborhood on a daily basis. The preservation of LES culture, history, and vibrant community depends on involvement and support from the new generation of residents, many of whom are not from nyc at all. I created the Real Neighbor Guide to LES to try and encourage new residents to get involved in any way desirable to them.
challenge
Through interviewing both new residents and longer term residents, organizations, business owners, etc, I found three key gaps: - Community groups, movements, and spaces have not made their needs or opportunities visible to the new resident demographic. - There is no intergenerational platform to access trusted neighborhood information. - Younger and newer residents don’t feel they have a consistent way to engage and participate in community activities.
Outcome
My final outcome was a large printed poster form of my monthly resource guide that I wheat pasted around the Lower East Side. Additionally, there is an Instagram account with a digital version of the guide. The guide includes a header tagline "Are You New Here?" and eight sections: Free Events, News, Ticketed Events, Neighbor Needs, Local Business Spotlight, Free Resources, Local History, and Volunteer Opportunities. The range of information included aims to ensure that any new residents will have at least one way of interest to get involved.
