SUMMARY
This project began by considering how a lifetime of thinking and making can be held in physical form. Working directly with Richard Sachs, we immersed ourselves in his studio, writing, and community to understand what people truly value about his work. The result is a limited-edition collector’s box that brings together printed matter, personal objects, and artifacts from his world. It creates a tangible, lasting connection between Sachs and the people who have been paying attention for decades, preserving his ethos beyond the bicycle frame.
challenge
We identified a gap between Richard Sachs’ deeply intentional way of working and the fast, fragmented nature of digital communication. Long-time followers value his philosophy, pace, and craft, but have limited opportunities to engage with it in physical form. At the same time, Richard prioritizes restraint, autonomy, and quality over scale, making traditional merchandising or frequent content a poor fit. Through studio visits, writing analysis, and community research, we saw an opportunity to create a focused, material touchpoint that aligns with both his values and his audience’s expectations.
Outcome
The project resulted in a limited-edition collector’s box designed as a complete physical system rather than a single product. It brings together printed matter, personal writing, and objects drawn from Richard Sachs’ studio, produced in small quantities with specialized partners. This format addresses the desire for slower, more intentional engagement from long-time followers while respecting Richard’s preference for restraint, quality, and autonomy. It fills a gap between constant digital content and traditional merchandise by offering a focused, meaningful touchpoint that reflects his values and way of working.
