SUMMARY

This project began with a simple starting point: I love oysters. My research led me to children's education and the need for hands-on, place-based early-science learning. I studied oyster ecology in NYC and explored how filtration, habitats, and water health could be taught to young kids. Using natural materials and interactive activities, I created tools that help K–3 students build curiosity, environmental awareness, and personal agency.

challenge

Interviews with teachers, caregivers, and environmental educators revealed a clear gap in early-science learning. Young students rarely engage with local ecology in a hands-on way, and classrooms often lack natural materials and simple, place-based activities. Educators also need low-prep tools that spark curiosity. This opened the opportunity to use oysters to teach water health and ecosystems.

Outcome

The project produced a simple, oyster-focused toolkit for K–3 learners. It includes hands-on activities and natural materials that introduce filtration, habitats, and water health in clear, accessible ways. Designed to be low-prep and easy to use, the toolkit gives educators a practical way to bring local ecology into early-science learning and spark curiosity and environmental awareness.
