SUMMARY
Radio is familiar and widely used by seniors, yet current programming doesn't support their wellbeing. Most stations offer passive entertainment—music, talk, news—nothing designed to reduce loneliness, encourage movement, or spark engagement. We recognized this gap and reimagined radio for older adults, creating interactive segments that combat isolation, inspire activity, and foster connection. This transforms a trusted technology into a tool for healthy aging—meeting seniors where they are, without new devices or digital skills required.
challenge
Older adults experience high rates of loneliness and social isolation, yet have limited access to wellness resources in familiar formats. Through research, we discovered that while seniors regularly use radio—a trusted, accessible medium—existing programming offers only passive content. Key gaps include: lack of interactive elements that reduce isolation, absence of gentle activity prompts, and missing emotionally engaging content. The opportunity lies in transforming radio they already love into an active tool for health, connection, and daily engagement.
Outcome
The outcome is a radio program built around three accessible types of engagement: light physical activation, cognitive stimulation, and emotional uplift. Short chair-based movement segments respond to seniors’ desire to stay active without needing transportation or complex fitness routines. Memory prompts, reflection questions, and light trivia provide gentle cognitive engagement that feels approachable and enjoyable. Nostalgic music and community storytelling offer emotional comfort and a sense of presence.
