SUMMARY

The Trinket Museum is a permanent space celebrating various collectibles like Labubu, Sonny Angels, and Hello Kitty. I started by researching collecting behaviors, conducting interviews, and analyzing trends to understand why trinkets lose value over time. Through iteration and prototyping, I designed an experience that highlights design origins, craftsmanship, and community stories, creating a space where trinkets are appreciated and celebrated.

challenge

Collectibles can be exciting at first, but that feeling often fades. People talked about losing interest once something felt too common or no longer “trendy,” which echoed the market drop where Labubu’s parent company lost $13B as hype cooled. Many also mentioned guilt or regret over the things they bought but didn’t connect with anymore. And with around 80% of toys eventually thrown away, it raised a bigger question: why do these items lose value so quickly, and why isn’t there a way to appreciate them for longer?

Outcome

The outcome is a concept for a permanent museum with seasonal exhibitions and a year-round permanent collection. The prototype includes two exhibit examples: one showing a collectible’s design origins through sketches and prototypes, and another reframing it as art through creative interpretations. The museum also functions as a gathering space for workshops, activities, brand launches, and community events, offering a meaningful way to preserve stories and elevate the value of collectibles.
