SUMMARY

An action role playing game set in a high fantasy world with knights, wizards... and a booming video game industry. Take on the role of a knight as he takes on the burden of defeating an industry he secretly loves in a narrative that completely subverts the typical medieval fantasy genre. Designed as an expansive parody of the video game industry, Good Lusk 2 uses satire to inspire discourse and raise awareness of the challenges that the industry currently faces.

challenge

Though the video game industry has rapidly expanded to be the largest entertainment industry in the world, it has a number of growing pains to overcome such as a result. Over-monetization, over-dependence on established ideas, and lack of visibility for independent creators are among the many issues that afflict the industry right now. As a result, video games have come to be prioritized more as commodities than art, which holds the medium back from its creative potential.

Outcome

This project is the integration of an extensive audit of the video game industry and a deep dive into postmodern design and philosophy. I ultimately utilized many elements of postmodern in this project, but mainly pastiche, a form of postmodern parody that uses satire as a means of critique and social commentary. Since game industry is both extremely large and rapidly evolving, it is hard to establish infrastructure that combats its problems in an impactful way. Further, it is consumers of video game largely enable many of the industry's problems, either directly or indirectly. So, I wanted to create Good Lusk 2 to paint a comprehensive picture of the problems facing the industry in a way that engages and resonates with its consumer base.
