Key Words
SUMMARY
IMPACT! is a rich resource, offering a cultural zine that delves into the realm of fashion and diminishing traditional garment techniques. It highlights intricate processes like traditional garment making, serving as a catalyst for social impact. By forging connections with companies and readers committed to supporting artisans, the zine integrates diverse cultural influences to enrich personal fashion narratives and foster individual expression. Bridging the gap between past and present, it empowers readers to embrace their cultural identity authentically through clothing choices, providing inspiration, guidance, and practical tips for incorporating traditional elements into modern wardrobes.
challenge
Being an international student from Singapore having lived in many cities, I found that I dressed differently in each city. I had a personal need to have a safe space where I felt comfortable to embrace my unique culture through fashion. This got me thinking about the degree of impact I could cultivate with a platform like IMPACT!. Culture, heritage, fashion & self-expression being such broad topics, it was vital to synthesise & narrow my field of exploration. Especially it being social impact driven, it was important to clearly identify my stakeholder needs and constantly listen to their feedback. With these topics being so saturated online, it was crucial for me to ensure that my project did not oversaturate my community needs and wants.
Outcome
With the internet being so overly saturated w content, it was key for my zine to distinguish itself from others.Originally, my project took the form of a physical zine which pivoted into a digital pdf & finally an interactive website containing my digital zine. From constant conversations with my community, the project evolved to fit my stakeholder needs such as having more interactivity or a space to share their own adaptations of traditional wear with others.Artisans also felt a disconnect w other artisans in other regions & this taking shape in the form of a website directly fulfils this need for them.Additionally, a website enables readers to have more flow when navigating compared to a PDF & allows for more room to build a community.
