SUMMARY
My project tackles the hidden dangers in the US food supply. Delving into the realm of ultra-processed foods, I uncovered the stark reality: added sugars, often disguised under various names on labels, are a primary culprit in dietary health issues. I developed a label simplifier, a sugar calculator, and a blockchain-based food origin map to empower consumers with clear, actionable health insights. These innovations empower consumers with knowledge, fostering informed choices for healthier living. Why does it matter? Because nourishing our bodies should be transparent, not a trial.
challenge
In identifying stakeholder needs, I found that consumers lacked clarity on food additives and sugar content. Through surveys and interviews, I discovered a gap in accessible information, leading to poor dietary choices. The opportunity arose to create tools that simplify complex labels, calculate sugar intake, and trace food origins, addressing these needs by empowering consumers with transparent, actionable data for healthier choices.
Outcome
The project culminated in a trio of tools: a label simplifier to demystify ingredient lists, a sugar calculator to monitor sugar intake, and a blockchain-based food origin map for transparency. These directly address consumers’ needs for clear information and control over their dietary choices, filling a crucial gap in the market for accessible health data.
